Art competition winners Hally Nguyen and Alfie Hunter from Hallsville Primary School with their class at the Schroders London Boat Show

ExCeL London's Exhibition centre recently held an art competition for all local school children aged fifteen and under. With £250 worth of art equipment to be won, their picture on display at ExCeL London and tickets for their class to Schroders International Boat Show in January, schools across the area rushed to enter their artwork.

On Tuesday 2nd March, ExCeL London's Chief Executive, Jamie Buchan will be handing out cheques to the two winners from Hallsville Primary School with their art teacher Madeleine Lee.

ExCeL London invited pupils to draw or paint a picture titled 'ExCeL London and East End Life', which could be based on anything to do with the East End of London. Over 60 pictures were received and a judging panel which included: Docklands Artists Gillian Burrows, ExCeL London Chief Executive Jamie Buchan and ExCeL London's Director of Marketing & Communication Sarah Horrell, shortlisted the entries to ten.

Readers of the Newham Recorder then selected their favourite pieces of artwork. There was an overwhelming response of people voting for the winner, but in the end there could only be one winner from each age group:

  • 5-8 years old category winner - Alfie Hunter - Hallsville Primary School
  • 9-11 years old category winner - Hally Nguyen - Hallsville Primary School

  • Date: Tuesday 2nd March
  • Time: 11:00am
  • Location: ExCeL London's West Entrance

Says Jamie Buchan, CEO of ExCeL London: "As an integral part of East London, ExCeL London is committed to the local community and the art competition has been a fantastic way to involve the schools and children in feeling part of ExCeL London and their borough. We had a tremendous number of entries and the artwork that we received was of a very high standard. I was extremely impressed with the creativity and the way the children translated ExCeL London and the East End into art."

Head of South West Newham Education Action Zone, Andi Smith said: " SW Newham EAZ and ExCeL London have a long-standing and effective working partnership. It's very encouraging to see local business supporting schools in creative learning, and our congratulations go to Hallsville Primary School for winning both categories in the competition. This school has a good reputation for creative learning and the arts."
